The Yoga of Aging Satsang — Fall 2024

A path under trees with a stone fence and a gate.

What does it mean to thrive as we get older? How do we stay current, ready and resilient? The answers will be different for each of us, and may change over time.

A satsang (SAHTsang) is a community for mutual learning and support. The Yoga of Aging Satsang is a community in which each participant is able to explore their own answers about how to thrive as they age. We will read two books together, have open and supportive conversations, and be guided through meditations that aid the work of building resilience and readiness.

I am thrilled and proud that the fall session is sponsored by Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute, where I completed yoga therapy certification.

Reviews from previous participants:

“This kind of offering is really wonderful in our age group and I think it fills an unmet collective need. The open discussion with readings provides a welcome chance to just be together and talk. The meditations you offer add a rich dimension.”

“I felt it was a safe harbor where we could truly explore our feelings without judgement. Share laughs, fears and tears!”

The texts:

Ram Dass, Still Here. Dass, a nationally-known and beloved yoga teacher, skillfully touches on most of the major concerns and fears around aging, increased frailty, and death. He wrote this book after he experienced a major stroke, and so comes to the table with challenging lived experiences.

Margarethe Magnussen, The Swedish Art of Aging Exuberantly, offers a delightful and sometimes humorous treatment of the aging process. Magnussen writes at the age of 86 and reports on her lived experience. Magnussen is ‘the guru next door.’ She is not a yogi, but offers many joyful and profound reflections on how to live well in an older body.
